School wins grant to train APRNs

The Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship grant awarded by the U.S. Public Health Service, Health Resources and Services Administration, aims to increase the nation’s primary care providers by funding advanced practice nursing education. The grant will partially pay for tuition, fees, stipends and books for Loyola nursing students, especially those committed to working in underserved communities and rural areas.

The grant support is important as the nation experiences the burgeoning need for access to primary care and a greater demand for family nurse practitioners, according to Ann H. Cary, Ph.D., M.P.H., R.N., professor and director of the School of Nursing. The grant will be distributed through Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship scholarships to incoming Loyola Doctor of Nursing Practice and Master’s of Science in Nursing students beginning in Fall 2013.

Cary herself was a recipient of one of these federal traineeships while pursuing her master’s degree. “This grant is an example of work force development policy in action,” Cary said. “Loyola is a partner in helping the federal government build capacity in primary care through the Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship program.”
